Chemistry In Person Workshop - Unit 3 Nuclear Chemistry

This workshop will be held on Friday November 1, the day before the November 2 OSTA (Oregon Science Teachers Association) workshop in Eugene. It aims to engage participants in the Patterns Biology yogurt engineering project.

During this 3-hour workshop, participants will:

  • Design and produce their own batch of homemade yogurt

  • Explore the role of biomolecules, enzymes, and metabolism in the yogurt fermentation process

  • Conduct tests to analyze the characteristics of yogurt, including:

    • Taste profile

    • pH measurement

    • Viscosity assessment

In this interactive learning experience, participants will gain practical skills in yogurt preparation and develop a deeper understanding of the scientific principles underlying the properties of this fermented dairy product. The workshop will emphasize an inquiry-based approach, allowing participants to explore, experiment, and draw conclusions about the factors that influence yogurt's sensory and physical attributes.

This opportunity is ideal for educators, science enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the science of fermentation. Participants will leave the workshop with a new appreciation for the complexity of yogurt, as well as ready-to-use lessons to incorporate into their own classrooms or other educational settings.

Final yogurt samples will be available for pickup at the OSTA conference on November 2.

Minimum registration of 5 teachers by Friday, October 25 is needed to run this workshop. If the workshop is canceled, you will be notified on October 26. Teacher attendees will be paid for 3 hours at $50/hour through the WRAP grant. Registration is free.

Physics In Person Workshop - Engineering a Shoe

This workshop will be held the Friday before the Nov 2 OSTA (Oregon Science Teacher Association) workshop in Eugene. It aims to engage participants in the Patterns Physics’ Unit 3 project about engineering and design of a shoe. In the workshop, participants will actively engage key data collection and data discussion experiences to make data-informed decisions about a shoe design. Participants will be provided updates, highlights, and insights about the unit learning plan that targets NGSS performance expectations around force, impulse, and momentum.

We need a minimum registration of 5 teachers by Friday, October 25 is needed to run this workshop. If the workshop is canceled you will be notified on October 26. Teacher attendees will be paid 3 hours at $50/hour through the WRAP grant to attend this workshop. Registration is free.

Biology In Person Workshop - Unit 2:  Yogurt Engineering: Exploring Biomolecules, Enzymes, and Metabolism

This workshop will be held the Friday before the Nov 2nd OSTA (Oregon Science Teacher Association) conference in Eugene. The workshop aims to engage participants in the Nuclear Chemistry Unit in Patterns Chemistry. In the workshop, participants will examine the scope and sequence of activities in Unit 3, which address how elements are made inside of stars (HS-ESS1-3), various types of nuclear reactions (HS-PS1-8), and how decay can be used for radiometric dating (HS-ESS1-6). Additionally, participants will engage in data collection and a data discussion on half life to make data-informed predictions for the time required before a radioactive sample is considered safe.

Minimum registration of 5 teachers by Friday, October 25 is needed to run this workshop. If the workshop is canceled you will be notified on October 26. Teacher attendees will be paid 3 hours at $50/hour through the WRAP grant to attend this workshop. Registration is free
