This workshop will be held on Friday November 1, the day before the November 2 OSTA (Oregon Science Teachers Association) workshop in Eugene. It aims to engage participants in the Patterns Biology yogurt engineering project.
During this 3-hour workshop, participants will:
Design and produce their own batch of homemade yogurt
Explore the role of biomolecules, enzymes, and metabolism in the yogurt fermentation process
Conduct tests to analyze the characteristics of yogurt, including:
Taste profile
pH measurement
Viscosity assessment
In this interactive learning experience, participants will gain practical skills in yogurt preparation and develop a deeper understanding of the scientific principles underlying the properties of this fermented dairy product. The workshop will emphasize an inquiry-based approach, allowing participants to explore, experiment, and draw conclusions about the factors that influence yogurt's sensory and physical attributes.
This opportunity is ideal for educators, science enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the science of fermentation. Participants will leave the workshop with a new appreciation for the complexity of yogurt, as well as ready-to-use lessons to incorporate into their own classrooms or other educational settings.
Final yogurt samples will be available for pickup at the OSTA conference on November 2.
Minimum registration of 5 teachers by Friday, October 25 is needed to run this workshop. If the workshop is canceled, you will be notified on October 26. Teacher attendees will be paid for 3 hours at $50/hour through the WRAP grant. Registration is free.
